PARIS (AFP) — America’s Ashley Harkleroad was knocked out of the French Open by Serena Williams on Sunday but stole the headlines from her publicity-conscious compatriot by announcing she has posed for Playboy.
The blonde 22-year-old, who has endured a mediocre career on the women’s tour and sits at 61 in the world, revealed she had agreed to the photoshoot while she lay in a hospital bed recovering from surgery to remove a cyst on her ovaries.
Harkleroad, who lost her first round match 6-2, 6-1, believes she is the first tennis player to pose for the magazine and follows American swimmer Amanda Beard in baring all for the cameras.
“I was just lying there in hospital for three weeks, and an offer came to me. I thought about it and it was something that I did. I’m proud of my body,” said the Florida native whose pictures will appear in the August edition.
“I stay in shape and try to stay fit. I’m just trying to represent a female athlete and her body. That can be sexy too. It’s no big deal.”
Williams said she backed Harkleroad’s decision to pose for the magazine.
“I do appreciate that magazine. I think Hugh Hefner is a great businessman, and he has a niche that he just did really amazing in,” said Williams.
“I’m happy for her if that’s what she wanted to do. It takes a lot of courage. And whether I’m courageous enough, I don’t know, but it’s great for someone to be so courageous and tough.”
She was just 17, so you know what that means.
Specifically, it means Girls Gone Wild honcho Joe Francis may have to think twice before he starts peddling five-year-old footage of Ashley Alexandra Dupré, the now 22-year-old call girl who factored into the downfall of ex-New York Governor Eliot Spitzer.
Francis' Mantra Films announced it had withdrawn a $1 million offer to Dupré to take part in the 2008 GGW spring-break tour, after it unearthed video of her shot in March 2003 in Miami. Dupré's lawyer, Don A. Buchwald, immediately took steps to inform Francis that the New Jersey native, her birthday being April 30, 1985, was only 17 when the footage was taken.
But Francis tells E! News he's going ahead with the release anyway, albeit not for at least a few days while his lawyers debate the repercussions.
"We are getting pressure from her lawyer," Francis said at his Santa Monica, Calif., office Wednesday. "As soon as we withdrew the million dollar offer—he is just mad because her price has dropped. Even if she was only 17, we could still release it. There was no sexual contact. There's only nudity."
According to Francis, as long as there's no sexual content, he can go ahead and post the footage online. He added that the video will be up "in the next couple of days."
But as unsavory as that sounds, legal experts say there's apparently something to his argument.
"I understand there is toplessness in this video, but no sexual conduct," Loyola Law School professor Stan Goldman told E! News. "The federal case in Florida, Lane v. MRA Holdings, that [GGW] are relying on would be relevant because this video was shot in Florida.
"This case defines what minors are precluded from consenting to and from the language it does not appear to preclude her from appearing topless as long as she is not paid."
It’s New York versus New Jersey in the scandal business. All sorts of new reports are emerging across the board for Eliot Spitzer’s alleged Mayflower Hotel tryst partner Ashley Dupre. The latest is she was a part of a cheerleader dressed call girl trio that joined in with Hollywood actor Charlie Sheen. No comment yet from anyone on the truth of the claims of that and the report comes from an Australian newspaper.
But if it is true, at least that was her job. A shocking new report claims that Dina Matos McGreevey, the woman that stood by her “gay American” husband Jim McGreevey when he went down in New Jersey (as Governor) and was removed from office for his own scandalous behavior was involved in threesomes with her husband and their driver.
According to a report from the New York Post the claims come from the driver, a man named Teddy Pedersen. He says the three were regularly involved in the trysts and he is now speaking out because he doesn’t like the way Dina Matos McGreevey has handled her role as the “victim” in interviews after the whole Spitzer and Ashley Alexandra Dupre scandal was uncovered by the Feds.
He says she was a willing participant in the threesomes and he believes that is ridiculous that she is trying to now cash in. He claims that the relationship between the three went on for years and they went at it together many times. It’s unclear if Pedersen is gay bisexual but he says he is living with a woman now. He claims that Dina Matos McGreevey knew Jim McGreevey was gay all along (she has denied this in her book) and they all went at it at their condo and also in hotel suites when they all traveled together.

And those are just some of the new details emerging today about the young woman Eliot Spitzer knew simply as Kristen; details which former prosecutor Wendy Murphy says call into question the assertion by many that prostitution is a victimless crime.

Ashley Alexandra Dupree was identified as “Kristen”, New York Governor Eliot Spitzer’s hooker at the Emperor’s Club VIP.
Dupre, whose real name is Ashley Youmans, was paid almost $4000 by Spitzer in a Feb. 23 rendezvous at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C.
The prostitution scandal caused Spitzer to resign yesterday, effective Mar. 17.
Dupre is an aspiring musician and has posted songs on her MySpace page. Since her identity has gone public, her song and MySpace page views have skyrocketed.

The mysterious call girl involved in the scandalous downfall of New York Governor Eliot Spitzer has finally been revealed. ‘Kristen’, as she is known in court documents about the Emperors Club VIP prostitution ring Spitzer was caught in, is actually a 22-year-old aspiring singer named Ashley Alexandra Dupre. Spitzer resigned on Wednesday after it was revealed he had arranged to meet the high-priced prostitute at a hotel in Washington.
The New York Times reports Ashley Alexandra Dupre (formerly Ashley Youmans) is the woman identified as ‘Kristen’ in court documents involving Spitzer’s communications with the Emperors Club VIP call girl service. Dupre appeared on Monday in U.S. Magistrate Court to testify against four people who have been charged in the prostitution ring case.
Dupre told the Times she has not slept much since the scandal became public and that she doesn’t “want to be thought of as a monster.” The attractive brunette’s MySpace page listed her as an aspiring singer and musician who moved to New York at 17 to pursue a career in music.
In her MySpace profile, Dupre writes, “Left and learned what it was like to have everything, and lose it, again and again… Learned what it was like to wake up one day and have the people you care about most gone. I have been alone. I have abused drugs. I have been broke and homeless. But I survived, on my own.”
Ms Dupre was born Ashley Youmans. She left home in New Jersey at the age of 17 and moved to New York where she hoped to become a singer, the Times said.
Ms Dupre did not comment when asked by the newspaper when she first met Mr Spitzer and how many times they had met.
“This has been a very difficult time. It is complicated,” she told the Times.
It is not clear whether or not Ms Dupre will face charges but she is reported to have hired a lawyer.
Federal investigators have alleged that a wiretap caught Mr Spitzer arranging to meet a $1,000-an-hour prostitute named Kristen who worked for the Emperor’s Club VIP prostitution ring.
Mr Spitzer is reported to have paid thousands of dollars over 18 months to the ring.
He could be charged with soliciting and paying for sex, breaking banking laws and with transporting someone across state lines for immoral purposes.
He could also lose his licence to practise law in New York.
It marks a spectacular downfall for the man once known as the “Sheriff of Wall Street” for his investigations of organised crime, financial crime and prostitution.
The father of three teenage girls is a leading supporter of Senator Hillary Clinton in her battle against Senator Barack Obama to become the Democratic Party’s candidate for president.
