UFC 85 main event Matt Hughes vs Thiago Alves fight has the aging legend Hughes as a short 7-5 UFC betting favorite over the Brazilian. Alves is a Florida Top Team product that is on a hot four fight KO streak leading up to his fight with the wrestler Hughes. Matt Hughes is the 9-5 UFC betting favorite to use his UFC experience to beat the younger Alves at Sportsbook.com
Alves has shown vulnerability to takedowns and he will have his hands full as a +160 UFC fight betting
picks underdog to the legend Matt Hughes. Hughes is coming off a lengthy 5 month layoff but his reports have been that he has had an excellent camp. Hughes has never had much of a problem with strikers having only been ousted only by superior grapplers. Hughes can hold his own striking with a hard left hook that has rocked some heads but Thiago has some explosiveness as a Muay Thai specialist.
Alves will have to have an answer though mainly for when the rock solid Hughes goes for a takedown. Huges can run the table on fights with his overpowering takedown power. Hughes has far more big fight experience having fought A-level caliber competition for the past 7 years while Alves is a relative pup.
Marchetti UFC Prediction System:
UFC 85 betting odds -185
Matt Hughes UFC 85 Power Rating: 9.1
UFC 85 betting picks odds +145
Thiago Alves UFC 85 Power Rating: 8.7

The City of Lubbock, a police officer, and the family of a man who was tased reached a settlement in a federal lawsuit.
A court order reveals a little more than that, as far as details go until the deal is formally signed.
Juan Nunez III died in April of 2006 after he was tased by a police officer investigating a domestic dispute report.
Nunez’ family claims that officer Matt Doherty used excessive force and that the LPD’s vauge "Taser Usage Policy" is to blame.
Officer Doherty tased Nunez four times within 40 seconds.
The officer claims he acted reasonably according to his training.
The city asserts police department training and policy exceed state standards.
The medical examiner ruled alcohol and a head injury from a fall caused by the tasing contributed to Nunez’s death.
In court records, the Nunez family has never stipulated a damage amount.
Before the gag order was issued by Federal Judge Sam Cummings attorneys for the Nunez family said they mainly wanted policy changes related to the use of tasers.

I had to jump on this one. As a teenager, I attended summer camp with actor Jason Beghe, and we were members of a loosely-knit camp clique for a time thereafter. I actually made some lifelong friends through that experience, but as moviegoers know, Jason headed for Hollywood and made his mark there. I must confess to having thought at the time he was something of a shallow guy – but then, who’s very deep at seventeen? With the Pet Sematary in my closet, I’m in no position to judge anyone.
For those who would say I spend quite a lot of time making judgments in this space: Discernment is another matter.
It’s gratifying to see someone you know (or knew) actualize their dream. For Jason Beghe, there seems to have been a speedbump along that road. In a recent video that was pulled from YouTube for reasons no one can quite put their finger on (yeah…right), Beghe viciously attacked the Church of Scientology. Apparently he was heavily involved in the quirky “religion” during the period of his noteworthy Hollywood outings.
Actually, to say that Beghe excoriated the group is akin to saying that Muhammad Ali was a “pretty good” boxer. The actor was like Looney Tunes’ Tasmanian Devil, unapologetically ripping the organization up one side and down the other.
Setting aside the possibility that his assault is an attempt at a “career bump,” it is the most unfavorable assessment of Scientology the public has seen to date – at least from one of its former celebrity members. Although the segment contained a substantial amount of profanity, this columnist believes it reflected passion rather than a lack of ability to convey a cogent message. Jason Beghe is clearly upset, to put it mildly, and believes that Scientology is a dangerous, harmful scam.

UFC 83 in Montreal was all it was expected to be, filled with exciting bouts and monster fighters going at each other.
The night started off with Mac Danzig obtaining his first win in the UFC since winning the Ultimate Fighter TV show.
The next big fight on the card was Rich Franklin vs Travis Lutter. This was a battle of the No. 2 and No. 3 fighters in the middleweight division.
The first round belonged to Lutter for the most part until his energy was almost completely gone. That's when Franklin stepped up and started to wear him down.
The second round was the end for Lutter. He was completely out of gas and couldn't protect himself. The referee awarded the TKO victory to Franklin.
Then it was time for the fight of the night, Georges St. Pierre vs Matt Serra. Right out of the gate, George St. Pierre came out and took Serra down pretty easily.
From there it was all St. Pierre, he got on top and would not let Serra out of his gun sights.
St. Pierre ended the champ's run in the second round by a TKO and took back his title.
Now that he is back on top of the division, it looks like no one can match his desire and work ethic to take his title away.

The choice for the nation’s top prospect, Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei quarterback Matt Barkley, made the selection for the West’s top recruit in 2009 pretty simple. Barkley is the premier player in the West this year, in what is a strong class for quarterbacks.
And in what is a deep and talented crop of linebackers, Manti Te’o from Punahou (Hawaii), is the #2 prospect in the region and the top defensive player from the West.
The region is well-represented, Utah boasting the top offensive lineman in the West in John Martinez from Salt Lake City Cottonwood, Nevada the top defensive end in Justin Chaisson from Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas and Washington the top defensive tackle in Seattle Garfield’s DeAndre Coleman. Oregon’s top prospect is tackle Charles Siddoway from Eugene Marist and Idaho’s headliner is linebacker Darren Markle from Meridian Mountain View.
Ten of the regions top 41 players have committed to USC, led by Barkley, linebacker Vontaze Burfict and safety Patrick Hall. BYU, Stanford and UCLA all each boast a pair of commits in the top 50.

The Return of Jezebel James debut, 8 and 8:30 p.m., Channels 19, 45.
Like most central characters on TV, Sarah (Parker Posey) is great at her work and clumsy at life. She’s a successful book editor. Her longtime boyfriend has left; her apartment and life are empty.
Now she’s learned that she can’t give birth. She turns the job over to her sister Coco (Lauren Ambrose), a drifter and rock groupie.
A classic comedy of opposites is done by skilled hands. The creator is Amy Sherman-Palladino, who wrote zesty dialog for “Gilmore Girls.” Posey has long been a superstar of the independent-film world; Ambrose co-starred in “Six Feet Under.” This mid-season show crackles with sharp, verbal humor.
We can’t vouch for the second episode, which brings in Oscar-winner Dianne Wiest and actor-turned-novelist Ron McCarty as the parents of Sarah and Coco. The opener, however, is a great start.
Catch Me If You Can (2002), 8-11 p.m., Channels 9, 22.
Frank Abagnale, Jr., was a scam master. He pretended to be a pilot, a lawyer, a surgeon; few people doubted him.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks are terrific as Abagnale and the ploddingly persistent FBI man who chased him. Steven Spielberg directed, providing it a light, breezy feel. The result is a light, fun film.

Lance Farber, the 47 year old new age chiropractor boyfriend of our new city planning director John Rahaim, who last weekend set their bed on fire and smeared crushed tomatoes all over the historic landmark apartment the city had put them up in, had a brief appearance in court today, where his bail was set at $1 million. Farber would have been in court longer, except that his attorney, noted local criminal lawyer (and Matt Gonzalez for Mayor campaign treasurer) Randy Knox, said Farber’s been suffering terrible migraines ever since he set the place on fire and fled the scene.
Making that splitting headache even worse, Farber was also formally presented with the paperwork for the second restraining order that Rahaim filed against him after Rahaim discovered the fire. (Farber violated the first restraining order when he tried to call Rahaim from jail.) Knox says it is an “accurate assessment” to describe this situation as a lovers’ quarrel, and that Farber was having a hard time adjusting to life in a new city, having followed Rahaim from Seattle for Rahaim’s new job.
In an attempt to keep the issues about our city and not just entertainingly-lurid soap opera blog fodder, the Chron also rushed out a piece about the city planning situation in SF (i.e., who wants more condos?). Also, the damages report show that the antique furniture that Farber toppled over is all okay, but the house will need about $30,000 of new carpeting and paint to repair the smoke damage. Guess that tomato stuff washes right off, huh?

The pilot of this Cathay Pacific Airways new Boeing Co. 777-300 ER passenger jet, shown Jan. 30, 2008 flying very low over Paine Field, in Everett, Wash., has been fired, airline officials said. Capt. Ian Wilkinson, who has appealed the firing, reportedly flew as low as 30 feet above the field with the landing gear retracted after taking delivery of the new jet. (AP Photo/Matt Cawby)
By WILLIAM FOREMAN – 1 day ago
HONG KONG (AP) — A Cathay Pacific Airways pilot was fired after he swooped down and buzzed a Seattle-area airfield without permission while taking delivery of a Boeing 777-300ER passenger jet, the airline said Wednesday.
The Hong Kong carrier — which would not identify the pilot — said it was still investigating the Jan. 30 fly-by event at Paine Field, 30 miles north of downtown Seattle and home to a Boeing plant.
Cathay spokeswoman Carolyn Leung said the pilot was dismissed last week because he did not seek or obtain approval for the fly-by, which has been done several times before at air shows with the airline’s permission.
An airline statement said another pilot on the plane has been subject to disciplinary proceedings, but Leung would not elaborate on the case or other details.
Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post reported Sunday that the airline’s chairman, Christopher Pratt, was on the plane when the pilot swooped back over the Boeing plant shortly after taking off.
Images of the stunt were posted on YouTube and the Web site of a Seattle-area plane spotter, Matt Cawby.
The 777-300ER is 242 feet long, weighs about 350 tons and is listed at $264 million.
A Federal Aviation Administration spokesman, Mike Fergus, told The Seattle Times the flyby was under investigation.
