BOSTON - The One Laptop Per Child project is about to find out whether Microsoft Corp., a rival the nonprofit group once derided, is the solution to its problems in spreading inexpensive portable computers to schoolchildren.
Microsoft and the laptop organization announced Thursday that the nonprofit’s green-and-white “XO” computers now can run Windows in addition to their homegrown interface, which is built on the open Linux operating system. That had been anticipated for months, but it amounts to a major shift.
Nicholas Negroponte, the founder of the laptop project — which aims to produce $100 computers but now sells them at $188 — acknowledged that having Windows as an option could reassure education ministers who have hesitated to buy XOs with its new interface, called Sugar. Negroponte had hoped to sell several million laptops by now; instead he has gotten about 600,000 orders.
Beginning in limited runs next month, XO buyers will have the option of computers loaded with or without Windows. Versions with Windows will cost $18 to $20 more; $3 of that is for Windows, and the rest covers hardware adjustments, like an additional memory-card slot, needed to make Windows run.
Soon Negroponte hopes to sell just one kind of machine with a “dual-boot” mode, meaning users would have Windows and Linux, and choose which to run each time. Because that will take advantage of a broader hardware redesign, the dual-boot XOs will cost about $10 more than today’s versions, Negroponte said.
Hopes to reach more children
Despite the higher price — and Windows’ inability to take advantage of some key features of the XO — Negroponte said his project would benefit from Microsoft’s strengths in selling and deploying technology.
“I think our goals are dramatically enhanced with Microsoft’s decision and this partnership because we will reach many more children,” he said. “There are now many more countries prepared to look at the XO and collaborative learning and some of the things we stand for.”

United Airlines cutting up to 1600 jobs, 100 planes

, , ) on Wednesday confirmed plans to reduce the number of salaried and management employees and contractors by 1,400-1,600, including the previously announced 500 employee reduction by year-end, as it removes 100 aircraft from its main fleet. The plane reduction includes a previously announced cut of 30 Boeing 737s as it reduces its domestic capacity in the fourth quarter by 14% year over year. Over the 2008 and 2009 period, cumulative mainline domestic capacity will be reduced between 17% and 18% and cumulative consolidated capacity between 9% and 10%. The move will enable the Chicago-based carrier to “build a stronger, more competitive business better able to withstand record oil prices and a softening economy.” When complete, the fleet reduction is expected to retire United’s oldest and least fuel-efficient jets, and will lower the company’s average fleet age to 11.8 years, the company said.

RPT-ANALYSIS-Indian fuel price rise may force rate response

(Repeats story issued late on Wednesday)
By Surojit Gupta
NEW DELHI, June 4 (Reuters) - India’s decision to raise retail fuel prices on Wednesday should kick the headline inflation rate to 13-year highs above 9 percent in coming weeks, and that may force an interest rate rise from the central bank.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has relied heavily on cash management tools over the past 18 months to fight inflation, with the government trying to find other ways to cool prices as raising rates had become politically tricky. But with inflation heading towards double digits and government steps to contain prices adding to the budget deficit, analysts say the central bank may have to change tactics.
“I think there is a compelling case for hiking the repo rate by 25 basis points. The quantum of the fuel price hike is much more than anticipated,” said A. Prasanna, economist at ICICI Primary Dealership in Mumbai.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said the country must not further subsidise soaring prices of oil and other commodities to protect consumers.
After 10 days of debate, the communist-backed coalition on Wednesday agreed to raise state-set petrol and diesel prices by about 10 percent, more than expected, to help curb losses at its state-owned refiners. See [ID:nDEL56765]
“Inflation will worsen and the central bank has to be seen to be doing something. I expect them to act,” Prasanna said.
Federal 10-year bond yields rose to 8.16 percent, the highest since late April, while the stock market fell 2.8 percent to a two-month closing low on worries of accelerating inflation and a squeeze on corporate earnings. Continued…

8 arrested in raid on suspected counterfeit ring

Careful with those Trojan brand condoms from the discount store. They may not be the real thing.
Same with the Barbie doll and the Louis Vuitton handbag.
In raids in the metropolitan area yesterday, federal agents arrested at least eight people and charged them with heading a counterfeit products ring. Authorities say the ring has been smuggling into the country and then distributing massive quantities of fake brand-name goods manufactured in China, including Apple iPods, Major League Baseball and National Football League caps and Marvel comic books.
The counterfeits, which included millions of the phony Trojans, were sold for the past three years mainly in small discount stores in the area, as well as elsewhere in the country, including Texas and Virginia, according to court documents.
A spokeswoman for Church and Dwight, the company that manufactures the legitimate Trojan condoms in the United States, declined to comment on whether the counterfeit Chinese condoms could fail to prevent pregnancies or the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.
But a source familiar with the federal investigation said that while the counterfeit condoms were of inferior quality, samples had been tested and they were no riskier to use than legitimate ones.
The packaging of the Chinese condoms is almost identical to the legitimate ones, except that the counterfeit packaging is plastic, while the legitimate product is packaged in aluminum foil, said another source familiar with the investigation. “They [the counterfeiters] spent all their money on printing,” said the source.
One of the raids yesterday was carried out by both agents of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Food and Drug Administration at 18-28 Troutman St. in Ridgewood, Queens - a building used by the ZX Trading Co.
Two of the owners of ZX Trading - Lin Hu and her brother, Jian Hu - were among those arrested on charges of selling counterfeit goods.

Fox 31 forecast for May 21

It’s been feeling a lot like summer lately, and the above average heat will continue for one more day.
The large ridge of high pressure dominating our weather pattern will keep its grip on the state through the afternoon. As a result, temperatures will once again climb into the 80s. In fact, today will likely be the warmest day of the week with highs near 90 degrees in northern Colorado. Winds will turn breezy at times with gusts reaching 25 mph out of the south. After enjoying morning sunshine, the afternoon will bring increasing clouds and a slight chance of a few isolated storms in Weld County. Some of these storms could become severe over the northeast plains, producing large hail and damaging winds.
Because of the continued warm-up statewide, rapid snow melt along with high fire danger will be a concern again today. However, relief from the heat and dry conditions comes on Thursday as the next storm breaks down the high pressure ridge, allowing some cooler air and more moisture to move into northern Colorado.

Les McGehee "Plays Well With" San Antonio

(openPR) - SAN ANTONIO – Les McGehee is well known as someone who “Plays Well With Others”. Now, the founder of the National Comedy Theatre (NCT) is bringing his hit comedy show of the same name to San Antonio.
“Plays Well With Others” is based on McGehee’s book, “Les McGehee Plays Well With Others: A ‘Grown-Up’ Handbook of Improvisation and Play’. The book, published in 2007, is the product of more than 20 years of experience in improvisational comedy. “After so many performances in so many places,” says McGehee, “I wanted to record everything I had learned about improv, and I wanted to pass on those lessons to the next generation of comics. Writing the book was my chance to do both.” “Les McGehee Plays Well With Others” has met with an enthusiastic response from readers, with Amazon.com customer Bowie V. Ibarra calling it “a must have for any aspiring improv comic performer.”
The Austin resident soon found another opportunity to share the lessons of his career when Ann Ciccolella, then director of the Zachary Scott Theatre Center (ZACH), asked McGehee to adapt his book into a stage show. In the process of designing the show, McGehee was quickly able to recruit his friends and colleagues from the Austin improv community. “One of the best parts of making ‘Plays Well With Others’ was getting to work with so many people I knew from NCT and ComedySportz,” says McGehee. “It’s always more fun when you have your friends around you.”
The San Antonio run of “Plays Well With Others” will be presented at The Overtime Theater, which has hosted the National Comedy Theater of San Antonio since March of this year. For McGehee, who appeared as a child on the San Antonio children’s show “Captain Gus” and started performing his comedy as a student at Smithson Valley High School (where he won state awards in drama), the decision to bring his show to the Alamo City was an easy one: “What I love about San Antonio is what I love about Austin. There’s such a strong improv scene in this city – not just professional troupes, but student companies as well, and they’re just as committed to putting on a great show as we are in Austin. San Antonio’s a great fit for NCT and for ‘Plays Well With Others’.”

One-stop voting period begins ahead of NC primary

RALEIGH, N.C. - Pennsylvania’s primary comes first on the calendar, but voters in North Carolina got a head start Thursday, three weeks before the state’s official May 6 vote.
Using North Carolina’s early voting option, a record 450 people had already finished voting by late afternoon at the Wake County Board of Elections. Outside, a legion of supporters for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton and a handful supporting Barack Obama crowded all four corners of the intersection in a rowdy effort to court votes.
"We have never had this many early votes on the very first day of a primary," said Cherie Poucher, director of the county’s elections. And, echoing the projections of state officials, she said that total turnout would eventually double that of an average primary.
Obama visited both Raleigh and Greenville for the afternoon, urging voters attending his campaign rally in Raleigh to go to the polls after leaving the event. Campaign staffers offered transportation.
"You might as well go ahead and go and cast your ballot (now)," the Illinois senator said as he ended the event. "I won’t tell you who you have to vote for, but I will tell you who I’d like you to vote for."
His words were enough to prod Evia Jordan to the polls, as she ended up in downtown Raleigh just an hour later.
"You just can’t beat the convenience of early voting," said Jordan, a supporter of Obama for the White House, Lt. Gov. Bev Perdue for governor and state Sen. Kay Hagan for U.S. Senate.
Both the Obama campaign and the campaign of Hillary Rodham Clinton are placing a heavy focus on the state’s early voting period. Obama officials pushed the issue several times during the Illinois senator’s campaign stop and launching a hotline to help people get information about voting.

SAWKAR: Binkley's dream come true

I am so happy for Mike Binkley. You early risers will remember waking up to him for many years on the 5 Eyewitness News morning show. You might also know that Mike is a big and very loyal KU basketball fan.
I am happy to report Mike was in the crowd in San Antonio when his beloved team won the championship. I haven’t had a chance to talk with Binks yet but I know he probably still has a smile on his face… that is… if he hasn’t stopped celebrating. Congrats to Binkley and the Jayhawks!
Mike and I anchored the morning show together but we also anchored weekends together for many years. I remember some weekends over the years when his Jayhawks would let him down. He used to take it so hard.
That’s why I am thrilled about this big win after twenty long years!
Rock Chalk Jayhawk!
